Ray Haas was university professor at the University of Virginia from January 1, 1993 until his retirement on May 24, 1999. He served as vice president for administration at the University of Virginia from 1982 until 1992. At West Virginia University, between 1961 and 1981, he was professor of marketing, director of graduate programs in business administration, acting dean of the College of Business and Economics, assistant to the president for management information systems, provost for planning, and vice president for administration and chief financial officer.

Haas was a 1966-67 ACE Fellow at Duke University (NC) and has served a three-year term on the Council of Fellows Executive Committee. He is past president of the Society for College and University Planning and has served as a consultant on planning, budgeting, resource allocation and reallocation, and marketing to more than 200 colleges and universities (in the U.S. and abroad) and four statewide systems of higher education. He also has been a consultant on planning to industry, including such firms as the Gillette Corporation and the General Electric Company. Haas has served as a member of the National Advisory Council to the National Center for Higher Education Management Systems (NCHEMS).

In 1982, Haas received the first annual Founder's Award given by the Society for College and University Planning for "Significant Contributions to the Theory and Practice of Planning in Higher Education."  In 2003, he received an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degree from Holy Family University (PA). He earned his BS from Rider University (NJ), an MBA from Lehigh University (PA), and a DBA from Indiana University.
